Composer / Gharana:

Traditional vilambit bandish in Yaman.
Not attributed to a known composer.
Popular especially in:

  • Jaipur–Atrauli
  • Agra gharana
  • Gwalior-style vilambit khayal presentations

Bandish Insights:

  • A slow, introspective vilambit highlighting longing and separation (viraha bhava).
  • Excellent for expansive aalap, meend, and layakari in vilambit.
  • Phrases like “बीत गयी रैन” allow deep elaboration on Sa–Re–Ga–Re contours of Yaman.
  • Works well as the opening vilambit before a madhya/drut composition.

Anecdote:

  • Mallikarjun Mansur ji’s version is considered definitive—his Jaipur gayaki brings weight and gravity to each phrase.
  • Many younger vocalists study this as an example of how to handle vilambit Yaman with patience and nuance.
