Composer / Gharana:
An excellent rendition of the Aiman bandish composed originally by Mir Qutub Baksh (1770-1872) who was the principal musician in the court of the last mughal emperor, Bahadur Shah Zafar (1775-1862), who had given him the title of Tan Ras Khan. The Ustad is one of the most important figures in the history of the Delhi gharana.
Commonly sung in Sufi–Khayal lineage and popular among:
- Jaipur–Atrauli
- Patiala/Kasur
- Mewati
- Folk–classical fusion traditions
Bandish Insights:
- A devotional–Sufi bandish using Persian imagery:
– bahr-e-ulfat (waves of love)
– khizr (the mystical boatman/guide) - Ideal for expressive bol-baant, sargam, and rhythmic taans.
- Often used as a transition piece between classical and semi-classical segments.
- “किनारे किनारे” repetition provides solid rhythmic anchoring.

Notes: According to @AllyAdnan, it is great to see Akbar sing not only the asthayi (Kinaray Kinaray Kinaray Kinaray, Dariya Kashti Bandho Re) but also the original, though relatively unknown, manjha (Mauj Aaye Behr-e-Ulfat Mein Khizar). Curiously, he sings an antara (Khaiwan Haar Ki Laaj Tumhi Ho) from the Patiala gharana instead of the original antara (Is Qadar Meherbani Bekunay) of the Delhi gharana.
Akbar is undoubtedly the most promising of the young vocalists from Pakistan. This video is a great addition to the wonderful music being archived by the lovely folks at The Dream Journey.
